Marriage Equality: Celebrating Love in all its forms

On 9 December 2017, Australia finally said YES.

The Marriage Act was updated to recognise what so many of us already knew: love is love, and marriage is for everyone, regardless of sex or gender.

The legal wording changed to define marriage as “the union of two people to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.”

A small sentence - a massive step forward.

🌈 What It Means

This change means your right to marry in Australia is no longer dependent on your gender or the gender of the person you love. It was a huge win, one that came after years (decades, really) of tireless campaigning by the LGBTIQ+ community and allies. And for many of us, it was personal.

❤️ Why It Still Matters

Marriage equality isn't just about legal paperwork. It’s about visibility, dignity, inclusion, and respect. It’s about knowing your love has value, not just privately, but publicly. It means your ceremony, your vows, your commitment to each other is seen and celebrated in the same way as everyone else’s.

💬 Celebrating Equality in Your Ceremony

As a proud LGBTIQ+ marriage celebrant, I’m all about creating ceremonies that honour love in all its forms - with joy, personality, and heart.

Whether you’re part of the rainbow fam or not, using inclusive language, modern traditions, or even just a nod to the journey towards equality can make your ceremony feel extra meaningful.

Here are a few ways couples are doing this:

  • Swapping out traditional gendered terms for inclusive ones

  • Personalised vows that speak to shared values

  • Acknowledging the significance of being able to marry (especially for queer couples)

  • Choosing rituals or readings that celebrate diversity, strength, and community

🌟 Marriage Is for Everyone

At the end of the day, marriage is about two people making a lifelong promise to each other. It deserves to be celebrated authentically, and in a way that reflects you.

So, whether you're planning a ceremony that’s quiet and heartfelt or loud, proud, and full of glitter, I’m here to help make it personal, joyful, and inclusive.
