ALL THE LEGAL, NONE OF THE QUEUE.
Registry-style & legal only weddings in Melbourne
Maybe you don’t want the big production. Perhaps, you want to be married - properly, legally, soon - without eight months of planning or a room full of expectations. Fair enough. That's exactly what a registry-style wedding is for.
Here's the bit a lot couples don't know: you don't actually need the registry to have a registry-style wedding. An authorised celebrant can do everything the registry does: the paperwork, the legal words, the certificates, the registration - except we do it on any date, at any place, in your words. Your lounge room. Carlton Gardens. A rooftop in Brunswick. A winery, a beach, your favourite bar on a Thursday afternoon.
What’s included?

✓ Contact & catch-ups leading up to the day
✓ Travel within 40km of Brunswick East included (additional fees for outside this radius)

What is a registry-style wedding?
A registry-style (or legal-only) wedding is the shortest, simplest version of a legal marriage in Australia. The required legal words, your vows, two witnesses, three signatures, done in about 15 minutes. It's the same ceremony the Victorian Marriage Registry performs at the Old Treasury Building, just… wherever suits you, with someone who's learned your names and your story.
Registry vs celebrant: the honest comparison
| THE REGISTRY | A CELEBRANT (ME) | |
|---|---|---|
| Legally married | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes — same law, same certificates |
| Location | Their building, their room | Anywhere in Melbourne you love |
| Who marries you? | A celebrant you meet on the day | Me. I've learned your names & story |
| The ceremony | Standard script | Your words, your story, your vibe |
| Witnesses & guests | Limited by the room | Two witnesses to a whole picnic — up to you |
| Cost | Roughly $390-$600 depending on day and room | From $700, travel included within 40km |
If the registry's queue, room and script suit you, go for it. But if you're choosing "registry" because you think it's the only simple option, it isn't. You can keep the simplicity and lose the fluorescent lighting.
Where couples do it
Some favourites from real legal-only ceremonies around Melbourne: back gardens in the inner north, Carlton Gardens under the elms, the Merri Creek trail, living rooms with the dog as third witness, restaurant tables before lunch service. Two witnesses over 18 are all the law requires, the rest is entirely yours.
Registry-style wedding FAQs
-
Ceremonies at the Victorian Marriage Registry (Old Treasury Building) generally run from around $400 to $600 depending on the day and room. A celebrant-led legal-only ceremony at your own location starts from $700 with me, travel within 40km included.
-
Usually a celebrant. Your NOIM must be lodged at least one month before the ceremony, that applies to everyone, registry included - but a celebrant can then marry you on almost any date, time and place, without waiting for a registry slot.
-
Completely. Same Marriage Act, same certificates, same registration with Births, Deaths and Marriages. The only difference is the size of the fuss.
-
Absolutely. Lots of couples marry legally now and party later. And if you want the full ceremony experience down the track, a vow renewal or bespoke ceremony has no legal paperwork at all, which means no rules. I'll happily do both.
-
Yes. Two, over 18. Friends, family, or the couple from the next picnic rug.

After struggling to find someone with the right vibe for our legal only ceremony, we came across Darren and after our first catch-up we felt like he totally got what we were about and what we wanted from the day.

WANT MORE THAN A CEREMONY?
The adventure option
Registry-style is a ceremony. Elopement is a day, just the two of you, somewhere that means something, with the whole day built around it.
